American Lamb Kabob Challenge Promotes ALB’s Chef-to-Shepherd Campaign

(September 1, 2011)  Through the American Lamb Board’s (ALB) Shepherd-to-Chef Campaign, ALB is working to connect local lamb producers with retailers, chefs, media/bloggers and consumers.

Utilizing ALB’s local lambassadors in Seattle, Wash., on July 24, grills went wild at the First American Lamb Kabob Challenge. ALB teamed up with Bill the Butcher (a group of six butcher shops in the Seattle area) and Seattle Lambassador, Chef Liam Spencer of Lola, for the ultimate American Lamb Chef vs. Butcher kabob cook-off! Top honors went to Chef Spencer for his Mediterranean-inspired Lamb Kofte Kabobs.

Local lamb producer Reed Anderson of Anderson Ranches supplied lamb for all the Bill the Butcher shops, and was onsite answering consumers’ questions and educating them about the benefits of locally raised Lamb. ALB distributed recipe brochures, cut education information and lamb swag!

ALB and Bill the Butcher have also designated August as American Lamb Month, and lamb was on special throughout the promotion. To help publicize the Bill the Butcher promotions, ALB sent 10 Seattle bloggers a kabob challenge kit (which included kabob meat). The bloggers were asked to create a lamb kabob party and blog about it.
