Mike Guerry, Guerry Inc., Castleford, Idaho

A brief description of the operation.
Guerry Inc. is a family-owned, western range-sheep operation. The operation runs five bands of sheep, more than 800 cows and farms approximately 850 acres. The livestock run on federal (Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service), state of Idaho and private grazing lands, and the lambs are marketed through ownership in Iowa Lamb Corp. The end of 2009 marks 100 years in the livestock industry between Guerry, his father and grandfather (both of which are both deceased).

Why are you an ASI Guard Dog Member?
“I am a member to help provide the American Sheep Industry Association with unrestricted funds to defend us in the legislative and regulatory processes that we face.”

How do you think the industry has benefited from the Guard Dog funds?
“I think Guard Dog funds have helped in providing us representation in Washington, D.C. Also, by the efforts made in developing the many programs that have benefited our industry financially, as well as by defending us against opponents of our important programs like Wildlife Services.”

What do you think are the industry’s biggest needs for the future?
“First of all, we must maintain a strong marketing program by voting to continue the national lamb checkoff. Then, we must work on stabilization of ewe numbers, maintaining infrastructure (shearers, trucks, feedlots and packing plants) and bringing youth back into the industry.”

Established in 2001, the Guard Dog Program utilizes the recommendations and donations of dedicated industry individuals to address a variety of issues. We hope you enjoy learning about these individuals, their businesses and their foresight for the U.S. sheep industry.
