U.S. Represented at IWTO Congress

(July 1, 2007)  “Wool Marketing through Design and Innovation” was the theme for the 76th International Wool Textile Organization (IWTO) Congress held May 13-16 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Much of the discussion among delegates at this year’s congress focused on the need to improve demand for wool to ensure the survival of the industry.

The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) is the official representative of the U.S. wool industry in the IWTO.

IWTO provides an important link for ASI to communicate with the global wool industry. The meeting provided a chance for the U.S. delegates to speak with producers and textile companies alike who are facing similar challenges in their wool businesses as those being experienced in the United States.

Major discussion topics of the congress were the results of the Test Marketing Program, a collaborative project between Australian Wool Innovation, IWTO and Australian Wool Services with additional funding from 14 wool-growing countries to promote wool in the United States, and the change of U.S. law regarding labeling of wool fabrics and how it has impacted the textile industry.
